As a beginner crocheter I loved to crochet beanies. They are so easy and satisfying. It is always nice to know that something you crocheted is keeping someone warm and cozy!
As my skills improved I began to search for beanies that presented a challenge. A simple double crochet beanie is a fabulous gift but I wanted to take it one step further. I thought it would be really awesome to use a variety of stitches to create different textures and looks.
To my surprise most beanies and hat patterns were fairly easy to work up. They are absolutely perfect for that last minute gift. Simply add a pom pom to add a little fun. Especially for children! My daughter just loves her pom pom.
I now have a variety of different beanie and hat patterns that I have made and added to my favorites list. Each year I try to make different beanies then the year before. My daughter looks forward to seeing what hat I’ll make for her. She loves going to school with a new beanie to show off. Some years I have made enough for her to wear a different beanie for each day of the week.
In the past I have only made beanies for my kiddos. I rarely make things for people outside of the household mainly because I am always concerned that they will not fit properly. This year I decided to step out of the box. I set out to make a different beanie for both of my daughters and my niece and nephew. I tried to keep their personalities in mind when picking the pattern and colors. I even purchased a pom pom maker so I could make the perfect pom pom for each hat.
In today’s post I would like to share the finished beanies, the patterns I used and the yarn used to make each beanie. The beauty of these patterns is they can all be adjusted for different sizes.
The Beanies!
The Shell Stitch Beanie
I chose the shell stitch beanie for my niece. Although I have not seen her in several years her pictures tells me she is a little diva. She seems to enjoy fashion and color. I knew I needed a beanie that would match that personality. The shell stitch beanie seemed like the perfect choice!
This beanie works up really fast and has a beautiful texture. The pattern is written to fit a child of around 5 years old although I think you could definitely tweak the pattern to make whatever size you desire. I attached a pom pom to the top using a button. It is completely removable for washing or for a different look. Click here if you would like to try making The Shell Stitch Beanie.
The Jonathan Beanie
Crocheting for girls is easy. There are tons of patterns to pick from. However, crocheting for boys can be a little more difficult. When choosing my nephews hat I wanted something that had color but not too frilly or pretty. Luckily for me I found the Jonathan Hat. It is a very simple pattern that will look great on the boys and men in your life. The pattern comes in 4 sizes ranging from child to adult large. The beanie pictured here is the adult average size. Although my nephew is only 8 he is a big boy. I wanted to make sure the hat would fit. I also made the blue stripe a little larger by doing a row of single crochet and a row of half double crochet instead of just the one round of single crochet written in the pattern.

Trinity Stitch Crochet Beanie
I just love crocheting beanies for babies. They work up so quickly and always look super cute. I chose this pattern for my youngest daughter who is 8 months old. I really like the texture created by using the trinity stitch. To complete this hat I added a slip stitch border to the brim rather then the reverse single crochet border written in the pattern. I love how you can take a pattern and make it your own by changing small details.
I followed the pattern for the 6-12 month size to create the hat pictured above. Its fits my littlest princess just perfect! Click here if you would like to give this beautiful pattern a try!
A Hat for Alexis: Mama’s very first Pattern
I spent hours searching for the perfect hat for my oldest daughter. I have made so many hats for her that it was hard to find something that was not similar to the beanies that I have made for her in the past. I decided it was time to put on my thinking cap and create my own pattern. Using techniques found in other patterns I created A Hat For Alexis. It uses two of my favorite crochet stitches to create lots of texture and personality. My daughter chose the pom pom. It certainly represents her vibrant personality!
